My mother was a religious zealot.

She judged everything and everyone by the most extreme and literal interpretation of the Scriptures. In her pious opinion, the overwhelming majority of the world’s inhabitants were an evil and wicked lot, spending their waking hours walking hand-in-hand with Satan, attempting to corrupt as many of the pure and innocent as possible.

Believing she was surrounded by sin and immorality, she was on constant guard to protect her family from their evil influence.

Determined her only son would not fall prey to the temptations of the flesh, she started my indoctrination early.

Carrying me to Sunday morning church services as an infant, my mother cradled me for the full hour, packed me back into the car for the drive home, then returned with me under her arm for the evening service.

Later, when I was old enough to attend Sunday school (I was about four), I spent another forty-five minutes confined in a small basement classroom learning that Jesus was good, sin was bad, and vowing to never hide my light under a bushel.

And so it went, through my childhood and teen years…
